Shortly after midnight on June 17, while many members of the company were at the MSFA Convention in O.C., Harford County 911 received a call reporting a dwelling fire in the 2500 block of Crestview Drive in Fallston. Initial reports from the caller indicated a basement fire with heavy smoke in the residence. The caller also stated that he was still trying to get his family members out of the dwelling. Harford County Fire Dispatch upgraded the assignment to a Fire/Rescue Box bringing units from Fallston (Co. 13), Bel Air (Co. 3), and Jarrettsville (Co. 7) Volunteer Fire Companies in Harford County along with units from Kingsville (Sta. 48) and Jacksonville (Sta. 47) Volunteer Fire Companies in Baltimore County to the scene. First arriving Engine 1311 reported smoke showing from a 1.5 story wood frame dwelling. Initial survey of the scene determined that there was fire showing from the basement window in the Bravo/Charlie corner. All residents were determined to be out of the structure and accounted for at this time. The crew from Engine 1311 advanced a 1.75” hoseline through the front door (side Alpha, Division 1) of the dwelling and proceeded to the basement via the interior stairway and was able to begin extinguishing the fire which had extended into the ceiling of the basement. As additional units arrived, crews from Bel Air, Jarrettsville, and Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Companies stretched back-up hoselines, performed ventilation, and checked for fire extension. Kingsville VFC Tanker Truck 488 insured that an adequate additional water supply was available if needed. The fire was contained within 20 minutes by the crews initially dispatched.

During the course of the fire attack both members of E.1311's attack crew suffered injuries requiring transport to area hospitals. One member was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview for evaluation and treatment of a respiratory problem. He was released later in the day. The other firefighter was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment of a knee injury. He was also released a few hours later.

An investigator from the Office of the State Fire Marshal responded to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Results of his investigation along with estimates of the damage were not immediately available.

EMS Week - 2009
15th May 2009

“A proud partner in your community” is the slogan for EMS Week 2009 which will be observed across the United States from May 17th until May 23rd. It is a time to celebrate and honor those who help make the emergency medical services you receive run smoothly and efficiently; ensuring you receive priority care.

This year the Bel Air VFC has a week of scheduled events planned at local schools and assisted living facilities; where EMT’s and paramedics will discuss issues that directly affect the young and the elderly, such as bike safety, proper medication administration, and safety in the home.

The culmination of EMS Week celebration will jump one week, due to the Memorial Day weekend, to May 30th where the BAVFC will host an EMS Open House from noon until 2pm at the main fire station located at 109 South Hickory Avenue (across from the parking garage in Bel Air). The theme of the open house will be a “Teddy Bear Clinic” where children can bring their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal to the fire station for a “check up” by the EMT’s and paramedics. This gives children the opportunity to become familiar with what to expect if they need to ride in an ambulance or an ambulance comes to their house. This also gives them a chance to see, touch and ask questions about all the equipment on the ambulance. Remember, parking is free at the town garage and the BAVFC auxiliary will be on site serving refreshments.

For further information you may call the Bel Air VFC at 410-638-4400 or 410-638-4401 or visit the website dedicated to EMS Week at www.emsweek.org
