The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company is responsible for fire and EMS protection for approximately 105,000 people during the daytime and 80,000 people at night in an 80 square mile first due response district. This area encompasses both rural and suburban areas. We operate from two strategically placed fire stations, the main station located in downtown Bel Air on South Hickory Avenue approximately 8 miles north of Interstate 95, 35 miles north of Baltimore and the Forest Hill substation located on East Jarrettsville Road near Route 24 approximately 15 miles south of the Maryland/Pennsylvania state line. In addition to our own response district we also provide extensive mutual aid support to the surrounding fire and EMS departments in Harford County, Baltimore County and York County (PA).
During 2008 the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company responded to close to 8,000 fire and EMS incidents. To handle such a call volume we have a volunteer base of close to 175 fire, EMS, associate and auxiliary members and are supplemented by a company funded part time EMS staff. These personnel operate 5 engines, 2 towers, 1 rescue, 1, ems chase vehicle, 2 brush units, 1 air cascade, 6 utility vehicles, and 3 advance life support ambulances out of the two stations.
